Activating The 3 Positions of Purpose for Impact Leadership

If I’m being real with you, one of the biggest struggles I see; whether I’m talking to leaders, speakers, or entrepreneurs is this question of purpose.

People are talented. They’re driven. They’ve got experience.
But they’re still asking… “Am I really walking in what I’m supposed to be doing?”

And here’s what I’ve learned: purpose isn’t just something you find.
It’s something you step into.

There are three positions of purpose that every impact-driven leader must understand if you really want to move with clarity and confidence:
Positioned in purpose, positioned by purpose, and positioned for purpose.

Being Positioned In Purpose

When you’re positioned in your purpose, you’re actively doing the work you’re called to do.

You’re not sitting on the sidelines.
You’re in the room. You’re showing up. You’re creating opportunities.

For me, that looks like running a full-service media company where I get to live out my passion for content creation every day.

I remember going to an album listening party for Raheem DeVaughn. I brought my camera just to capture a few moments for social media. That was it.

But because I was already operating in my purpose, something shifted.

I didn’t just leave with content… I left as the official photographer for the event.

That’s what happens when you’re in position. Opportunities align with your purpose.

Why This Matters

When you’re positioned in your purpose, you stop waiting and start creating momentum.
You put yourself in environments where opportunities can actually find you.

How I Position Myself In Purpose

  • I consistently stay engaged in what I love

  • I create and share my work so people can see my value

  • I stay ready, so I don’t have to get ready

The Mistake I See Too Often

Too many people are waiting to be chosen.

But how can you get chosen, if you’re not in the room where the choosing happens?

Being Positioned By Purpose

Now this one hits a little different.

Being positioned by your purpose means your calling dictates where you belong.

Your purpose has a location. It has environments where it thrives.

If you’re a teacher, you’re going to find yourself in classrooms.
If you’re in healthcare, you’re going to be in hospitals.
If you’re creative, you’re going to gravitate toward studios, stages, and collaborative spaces.

Your purpose places you where your impact is needed most.

Why This Matters

Because some of you are frustrated… not because you lack purpose, but because you’re in the wrong environment.

You’re trying to operate at a high level in a space that can’t even recognize your value.

How I Position Myself By Purpose

  • I get clear on what I’m actually good at doing

  • I put myself in rooms where those skills are required

  • I build relationships with people already operating where I want to be

The Shift You Need to Make

Stop asking, “What should I be doing?”
Start asking, “Where does someone like me belong?” Then put yourself there!

That question will change everything.

Being Positioned For Purpose

This is the one most people overlook.

Sometimes you’re in a place, a season, or a situation that may not make sense in the moment.

You’re like, “Why am I here?”

But what I’ve learned is this:
You’re not always in position because of what you’re doing. Sometimes you’re in position because of what you’re about to discover. Sometimes you’re not even there for yourself, but for someone else.

You’re being positioned for purpose.

These are the moments that feel benign, like you’re just living life, that end up being transformational.

Why This Matters

Because if you miss the lesson, you miss the leverage.

That random event… that unexpected conversation… that opportunity you almost didn’t go to…those moments can shift your entire trajectory and legacy.

How I Position Myself For Purpose

  • I try to stay open instead of overthinking everything

  • I reflect on what I’m learning in real time

  • I connect the dots later instead of forcing clarity too early

Everything won’t make sense when you’re in it.

Everything won’t feel purpose driven.

But if you stay present long enough, it will make sense when you look back.

Bringing It All Together

If you really want to activate your purpose, you’ve must understand all three positions:

  • Positioned in Purpose: You’re actively doing the work

  • Positioned by Purpose: You’re in the right environment where the work gets done

  • Positioned for Purpose: You’re letting the work do the work through you

And here’s the part I want you to hear clearly…

Impact Leadership comes through action.

Because purpose doesn’t reveal itself fully to people who stay still.

Final Thought

Don’t let other people’s expectations define your path.

You were purposed for impact.
You were purposed for influence.
You were purposed for income.

But it starts with getting in position.
