Dreams Still Come True Even If That's Not How Your Dreamt It
One of the things I love most about hosting the Born To Be Dope Show is getting to sit across from people whose stories remind us that purpose doesn’t always move in a straight line. In this episode, I had a powerful, heartfelt conversation with JoJo Crews, host of the Prince of Pop Culture podcast, and his journey hit home in a real way. JoJo’s story is about dreams, detours, responsibility, loss, and ultimately, rediscovering your voice when life forces you to rewrite the plan.
JoJo grew up in Washington, D.C. on Saratoga Avenue, surrounded by music and culture. From an early age, he knew music had him. He was inspired by legends like Whitney Houston and Salt-N-Pepa, and living across the street from the original BET Studios made the dream feel tangible. By high school, JoJo wasn’t just dreaming about being an artist—he believed it was his destiny. He leaned all the way in, performing in plays, sharpening his vocals, and chasing opportunities wherever he could find them.
That pursuit took him as far as auditioning for shows like American Idol, camping out overnight just for a chance to be seen and heard. But like so many creatives, JoJo eventually ran into the hard truth that passion alone doesn’t pay the bills. Reality set in. Stability mattered. Responsibilities grew. And slowly, the dream that once burned so bright got pushed to the side as he focused on surviving instead of creating.
Becoming a father changed everything. JoJo talked openly about how that shift forced him to grow up fast and make decisions rooted in responsibility. He worked multiple jobs and spent years at a nonprofit organization that provided stability, but not fulfillment. That season of his life is one so many of us can relate to—doing what we have to do while feeling disconnected from what we were called to do.
Then came a turning point that reshaped everything. In 2013, JoJo lost his mother, and that loss rocked him to his core. Grief has a way of cracking you open, and for JoJo, it pushed him to find an outlet. He started a blog as a way to process his emotions, not knowing that it would become the doorway to an entirely new chapter. That blog led to media opportunities, red carpet coverage, and eventually, a full-fledged career in entertainment media.
What stood out to me most was how naturally JoJo transitioned into this space—not by chasing clout, but by being himself. His charisma, authenticity, and willingness to show up consistently allowed him to build real relationships and a respected platform. He didn’t abandon his love for music; he evolved it. He found a way to stay connected to culture, creativity, and storytelling—just in a different lane than he originally imagined.
JoJo Crews’ journey is a powerful reminder that setbacks don’t disqualify you—they refine you. Dreams don’t die just because life gets complicated. Sometimes they just change form. His story is proof that your voice matters, your experiences matter, and the very thing you’ve been through might be the key to what you’re meant to build next.
If you’re in a season where your passion feels delayed, detoured, or dormant, let this be your reminder: it’s not over. Stay connected to what lights you up. Trust the process. And never underestimate the power of sharing your story—because it might just open doors you never planned for.
